Sena Basnayake

Attorney Sena Basnayake was the first Sri Lankan to be admitted to practice before the Supreme Court in the United States. For three decades he has garnered a reputation as a premiere international law practitioner in the U.S. He is a member in good standing of the American Bar Association, the largest and most influential association in the legal profession. He is also a member of the American Immigration Lawyers Association.

Mr. Basnayake has been consulted on numerous occasions by the U.S. Department of State and various other governmental and private organizations on U.S., Sri Lankan and comparative legal matters. For example, Mr. Basnayake served as Counsel for the U.S. Government in the passage of the U.S.-Sri Lanka Double Tax Relief Treaty.

For several years he has been an invited speaker and conducted various seminars at the World Bank and the IMF regarding international law matters. He has also published numerous articles on international law and various other legal matters. He has also served as a Special Correspondent to the Press on international law matters, including such national media as Fox News.

In his three decades in the United States, Mr. Basnayake has been a tremendous asset to the expatriate Sri Lankan community. As an immigration attorney he has helped several thousands of Sri Lankans stay, work and live legally in the United States. He has served as a legal consultant to numerous Sri Lankan Ambassadors in the U.S. He has provided legal assistance to numerous Sri Lankan organizations, including serving to 20 temples in the U.S. and numerous churches and Hindu kovils.

He is a former President of the Sri Lankan Association and the Director of the Washington Buddhist Vihara. In 2007 he was honored with the Exceptional Performance award by the Sri Lanka Foundation for his contributions to the community. He maintains close relationships with former American Ambassadors and senior diplomats who maintain connections with Sri Lanka. Mr. Basnayake is an asset to Sri Lanka due to both his legal expertise and experience, and the fact that he has connections and experience working within the U.S. Government.

Mr. Basnayake received his Masters of Law in the U.S. and his Bachelors of Laws in Sri Lanka after passing his Advocates final exam at the Sri Lanka Law College with First Class Honors.
