Asserting that new COVID-19 clusters are appearing in the Colombo City, Mayor Rosy Senanayake yesterday called for a lock-down of the city for at least two weeks, to contain the spread.

“Our City is in danger. Therefore, I appeal to the relevant authorities to lock the city down for about two weeks to flatten the curve,” she said.

Ms. Senanayake told Daily Mirror that five percent of those who are randomly PCR-tested within the city limit are found to be positive.

“There have been 4,339 cases in Colombo city as of date,” she added.

She revealed that 200 employees of the CMC had tested positive for the virus.

“We are doing our best and had carried out 25,237 PCR tests among the city dwellers. CMC is currently working with 25 doctors and 45 Public Health Inspectors (PHI). I got a resolution passed at the CMC to recall retired PHIs for work. We are also thinking of getting medical students to come and help us in controlling the spread . I am going to request the corporate sector to help us by providing essential goods to those who are living in isolated areas,” she said.

“Public also have a role to play and should stay indoors, wear masks and wash their hands. It is difficult to flatten the spread of the disease without support of the general public,” she also said.(Yohan Perera)
