Vesak celebrations in Sri Lanka

Colombo was filled with various attractions in honor of Sri Lanka celebrating the very first United Nations International Vesak Day. Sri Lanka is hosting over 2000 delegates from several countries. Vesak is a religious and cultural festival in Sri Lanka and it is celebrated on the full moon poya day in May. Vesak Day is one of the biggest days of the year and is celebrated by Buddhists all over the world. Buddhists commemorate the the birth of Siddhartha Gautama, Siddharta Gautam’s supreme attainment as the Buddha, the Enlightened One and the Parinibbana of Lord Buddha. Many religious activities were organized such as Sil campaigns(observing the 8 precepts), Bodhi Poojas, Dansalas (Free food/drink stalls), Vesak devotional songs (Bakthi Gee), pandols(thoran) and lanterns. Devotees and pilgrims from all over the country gathered at temples to mark this great event.
