Surfing towards empowerment in Arugam Bay

Few women from The Arugam Bay Girls Surf club has taken the initiative to break barriers and community norms by starting an all-female surf club in Sri Lanka. Currently, the club has 17 members ranging in age from 11 to 40 years, all of whom are from the village of Arugam Bay. Thirty-year-old mother, Shamali Sanjaya leads the club. Some of the members were victims of the 2004 Tsunami disaster. “it took a lot for them to just even go out into the ocean ”  Tiffany Carothers, one of its founding members recalls.
