On the 35th anniversary of Rio by Duran Duran – What were five limey Brummy boys doing strutting around on the mythical Sigiriya rock, the peaceful stupas and scenes form the cultural triangle and the shutting around the beautiful beaches of Sri Lanka. These celluloid snippets couldn’t be more mismatched. But that’s where Rio was a trendsetter. It didn’t merely announce a genre-defining album, it defined a revolution, one which blasted through TV screens in all its technicolor splendor. Everything that looked and sounded 1980s was represented by the album. Its biggest singles, the title track, Hungry Like The Wolf, and the splendid “Save A Prayer,” formed the very foundation MTV built a platform on. The sense of mystic and carefree abandon displayed in those iconic videos have been etched in the vernacular of pop culture.
