A programme to plant 1,000 saplings in the Ella Rock area in the Rawana Ella Forest Reserve in Badulla, which was destroyed by a recent wildfire, was held yesterday.

A large number of schoolchildren and villagers enthusiastically participated in the programme which was conducted under the patronage of Uva Province Governor Maithri Gunaratne.

About 60 acres of forest cover in Ella Rock was destroyed by the fire that continued for about three days. The area is a popular tourist attraction.

Governor Gunaratne decided to take remedial measures by organising this programme to plant 1,000 trees endemic to the region in a bid to recover the forest patch.

Members of the Uva Provincial Council and Ella Pradeshiya Sabha, the Sri Lanka Army and public institutions also participated in the programme.
