Mahinda’s Sankalpa wins bronze for Sri Lanka

Mahinda College, Galle hurdler Navodya Sankalpa won a bronze medal when he finished third in the boys’ 400 metres hurdles as Sri Lanka settled for two medals at the 2nd Asian Youth Athletics Championship concluded at the Suphachalasai National Stadium, Thailand on Tuesday.

Sankalpa, who has also qualified for the IAAF World Youth World Championship, clocked 53.86 seconds to finish well ahead of China’s Haojun Xu to win the bronze. The event was won by Edwin Binsar of Indonesia who returned a time of 51.96 seconds. Silver medal was won by Ting Hsuan Huang of Chinese Taipei. He clocked 52.49 seconds. It was the second medal won by Sri Lanka at this championship.

Ratnayake Central, Walala athlete Harsha Karunaratne won a silver medal in the boys’ 800 metres on Sunday. The athlete coached by Susantha Fernando clocked creditable 1:54.99 seconds. Sri Lanka won one gold medal and three silver medals at the 1st Asian Youth Athletics Championship held two years ago in Doha, Qatar. (RF)
