Al Jabbar was officially sworn in for his third term on the Anaheim Union High School board of trustees. Jabbar was re-elected in November to a second term. Jabbar, who is president of the board, was appointed in 2013, but was elected in 2014, making him the first American Muslim to be elected to any office in Orange County and the first Sri Lankan to claim one in the U.S.

Jabbar and his colleagues on the board oversee the district’s budget and hire and evaluate personnel, including the superintendent. Jabbar’s parents, retired lawyer Mohamed Ismail Abdul Jabbar and retired school teacher Ainool Khair Jabbar, his son and daughter and his sister and two brothers attended the event. Jabbar’s wife, Sameeha, was unable to attend because she was out of the country. He was sworn in by former Congresswoman Loretta Sanchez in front of a crowd of appoximately 75 onlookers.
