Dr. Yasantha Rajakarunanayake, Ph.D.

For his excellence in Technology and Electrical Engineering.

Dr. Yasantha Rajakarunanayake is Awarded the Lifetime Achievement for his proven track record of innovation and research & development contributions, with experience in building and leading world-class teams to create innovative products and software solutions for the high-tech industry and recently leveraging Artificial Intelligence. He is also an expert mathematician with crucial knowledge, skills, and insights for high tech, with a solid software and algorithm delivery background.

Dr. Rajakarunanayake grew up in Ratmalana, Sri Lanka. He attended Royal College and received the highest marks in the Advanced Level Exam with 4A’S in the Mathematics stream. After studying at the University of Moratuwa in Electronics Engineering for a few months, he received a Scholarship to attend his dream university, Princeton. This is where he met Jeffrey Bezos, the former President and CEO of Amazon.

Dr. Rajakarunanayake is a senior technologist and scientist with 30 years of experience in the Bay Area. As of August 2019, he had 94 total US patent applications (granted and pending) with himself as an inventor.

Dr. Rajakarunanayake created innovative applications and AI algorithm designs for human presence and gesture detection with mmWave radar systems @ MediaTek (2019) and has developed Human Speech Recognition (wav2vec) type solutions integration (2019). He also recently developed and designed systems and algorithms that leverage Artificial Intelligence in novel MedTech and medical imaging applications. He successfully implemented and improved techniques and methodologies that enhance medical diagnosis (speed and accuracy of Pathology and CT scans with algorithmic AI innovations) (2017).

He is an expert in many key technical areas (e.g., WiFi, Digital Satellite Comm, Video, DSL, etc.) and has meaningfully contributed to fundamental technology and key product design and software through Silicon Valley companies, mainly during his tenures at MediaTek and Broadcom. He has experience in all parts of the Internet, mobility, connectivity, and cloud ecosystems, from designing low-level hardware functional blocks to streamlining software driver architectures, server systems, and adaptive inferential systems for cloud and high-tech edge devices.

Dr. Rajakarunanayake was Broadcom’s lead scientist/technical director for the wireless BU and Broadband BU. He has experience in starting, building, managing, and leading world-class teams to create novel products, software solutions, and product lines that have, in many cases, reached over $200 million in revenue for these companies. In 2015 he served as the key Technical director for novel product innovation for Broadcom Wireless BU, with revenue of around $3 Billion. Most recently, since 2015, he has acquired essential expertise in Artificial Intelligence (AI) algorithms, software, and applications and has a keen interest in applying this system-wide.

Sri Lanka Foundation International would like to Thank and Acknowledge Dr. Rajakarunanayake for his exceptional research and development in the key technical areas (e.g., WiFi, Digital Satellite Comm, Video, DSL, etc.) and for meaningfully contributing to fundamental technology.
