Meet Rising Star Award winner Sayuri P. Jinadasa, MD, MPH

We are awarding Sayuri P. Jinadasa, MD, MPH, because of her contributions to the field of acute critical care and her impressive educational achievements. Her lengthy list of accomplishments at such an early stage in her career and her dedication to training the next generation of physicians is genuinely worthy of a Rising Star!

Sayuri P. Jinadasa, MD, MPH, was born in Rahway, New Jersey, where her parents lived after they came to the United States from Sri Lanka. At the young age of five, she had already decided to become a physician. Her impressive educational accomplishments include three Ivy League degrees. She began with an undergraduate degree in chemistry from Princeton University in New Jersey, she then got her medical degree from Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons in New York, and lastly, she earned her Master’s of Public Health at Harvard T. H. Chan School of Public Health in Massachusetts.

Once Dr. Jinadasa completed her residency, she got double board-certified in general surgery and surgical critical care. She did a fellowship in surgical critical care from 2020-2022 at the Shock Trauma Center, University of Maryland Medical Center, Maryland, as a Surgical Critical Care and AAST Acute Care Surgery Fellow & Instructor before beginning her current position at Virginia Commonwealth University.

Dr. Jinadasa’s lengthy list of awards began in high school, where she was valedictorian, she was a Magna Cum Laude graduate from the Princeton University Department of Chemistry, and she won Outstanding Resident Teacher of the Year Awards from Harvard Medical School in both 2014 and 2020. In addition, she has created and directed courses for medical students in Advanced Trauma Operative Management, Minimally Invasive Trauma Surgery, Advanced Surgical Skills for Exposure in Trauma, and Advanced Trauma Life Support.

Dr. Jinadasa is the Assistant Professor of Surgery at Virginia Commonwealth University Health System, Virginia. She is a member of the Chest Wall Injury Society, the Society of Critical Care Medicine, the American Association for the Surgery of Trauma, the Eastern Association for the Surgery of Trauma, the American College of Surgeons, the Gold Humanism Society, the Association of Women Surgeons (Harvard Medical School Chapter), the Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center House Staff Quality Improvement Council, and the Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center Academy of Medical Educators.

Dr. Jinadasa is very involved in educating future doctors and surgeons. She currently holds multiple Instructor and course creator positions and actively mentors medical students. With only a decade of medical practice under her belt, she has contributed to seventeen books, forty-one journal articles, and numerous presentations and posters.

The Sri Lanka Foundation thanks Sayuri P. Jinadasa, MD, MPH, for her dedication to the field of trauma surgery and critical care. In addition to caring for patients in need, she is preparing a new generation of physicians. From the classroom to the operating room, Dr. Jinadasa is definitely one to watch!
